  • The Theme

I finally got around to publishing the theme for this website. I’m calling the theme “Scula” (A mix of Sen and Dracula) (very creative).
The repo for the theme is here and the RubyGems page is here.
I’m not really sure if I’ll update it any more as there isn’t really much to change.

  • Things Didn't Go as Planned

A few days late, but I was working on other stuff and didn’t really have the time to write about this.

The keyboard is probably screwed. I didn’t realize that my soldering iron was as screwed up as it was and I ended up ruining the keyboard PCB when replacing the capacitors, which kind of sucks since I don’t have another PS/2 keyboard.

I got a new RTC chip for the computer though. It still gives a clock error on boot and says I need to press the F1 key (which I can’t do since no keyboard), but at least replacing the chip seems to have stopped the loud and annoying beeping it kept doing before though, so that’s an improvement.

  • I bought an IBM PS/1

    So I bought an IBM PS/1 2011.

I got a really good deal for it on Craigslist. The computer, a mouse, an IBM Model M2, some floppy disks, all the original manuals and programs all for $85.
Sounds too good to be true right? In a sense, yes.
Despite everything being in almost perfect condition externally (little UV damage, no scratches, no permanent dirtying of any kind), the PC is missing the internal hard drive, the RTC chip is out of battery, and the keyboard’s capacitors are dead.

I ordered some new capacitors for the keyboard (and will probably just replace the capacitors in the computer itself just to be safe). Those should arrive tomorrow thanks to Amazon Prime.
I found a very nice and detailed guide for how to fix the keyboard. It seems like the capacitors dying in this specific model is a common issue.

    Will post more updates soon.
